Oncology: Its role in treating cancer

Below, we highlight some useful information to know about oncology and treating cancer.

What exactly is oncology?

Oncology is simply the study and treatment of cancer. The field of oncology consists of three different sectors –– medical, surgical and radiation –– all of which are extremely important in the process of treating cancer.

What is an oncologist and what do they do?

An oncologist is a medical specialist who focuses on diagnosing, staging and treating cancer; however, there are different types or oncologists too. Some focus on the surgical side of oncology while others study the medical and radiation side of cancer. All roles of oncologists are absolutely necessary and very important for the treatment of cancer.

The three areas of oncology and the role they play

Now that we have explained what oncology is, we are going to break down each area in order to better understand the role that it plays in treating cancer.

Medical

The medical area of oncology consists of the diagnosis and the study of cancer. There are many types of cancer that exist and most oncologists that focus on the medical side of things will spend hours, days and weeks studying the cancer carefully so that they have a good idea of how to effectively treat it.

Surgical

Many cancer patients require surgical procedures to remove the cancerous areas of the body. Having surgery done is a part of the oncology process and can often help treat the cancer. The surgical oncologists are able to see the cancer with their eyes and physically remove it as a means of treatment.

Radiation

The third and final part of oncology is radiation, which almost every cancer patient must undergo. Radiation helps remove the cancer cells from a person’s body through a series of sessions that involve exposure to radioactive waves.

Have more questions?
