Fight back against cancer with the right oncologist
It may be helpful to understand the role that an oncologist plays in fighting back against cancer.
What does an oncologist do?
An oncologist is a medical specialist who focuses on the study, diagnosis, staging and treatment of cancer. However, within oncology, there are three areas of focus –– radiation, surgical and medical. All three of these areas are important in their own way and below, we dissect each to offer a better understanding of the role that they play in the fight against cancer.
The roles of an oncologist
Medical
The medical side of oncology involves the study of cancer while also being able to diagnose a patient who has it. An oncologist who focuses on the medical side of things won’t be as hands-on, but rather focused on the patient’s medical history, diagnosis and plan for cancer treatment. The medical side is just as important as any other area of oncology.
Surgical
A lot of patients that have cancer do require surgery in order to remove cancer cells from the body. The surgical side of oncology requires more hands-on work because oncologists in this area have to perform invasive surgery in order to remove cancerous cells from parts of the body. A surgical procedure allows the oncologist to take the next steps in the cancer treatment process.
Radiation
An oncologist will also oversee the radiation process of cancer. This part of the process is not as hands-on but does require that the oncologist oversee, administer and review the radiation that the cancer patient will receive. There are conflicting views about radiation, but studies have shown that using it for cancer treatment helps destroy cancerous cells and put them to a halt.
The importance of having the right oncologist
It is crucial that anyone with cancer have a great oncologist by their side. Cancer is a deadly disease that requires the attention of a trained medical professional such as an oncologist. They can come up with a treatment plan that is customized to fit the needs of each patient. Through the fight back against cancer, the oncologist will lead the way and help each patient to make the best decision possible.
