Gynecological Cancer Treatment Plans

Gynecological cancer treatments need careful planning. Discussing the patient’s health is an important topic during the first appointment. This first visit is also for addressing concerns. Here are the details about the available gynecological cancer treatments.

Hysterectomies

Two types of hysterectomy are available as gynecological cancer treatments. A simple hysterectomy will remove the whole uterus. This will include the cervix. It is the most common treatment for cervical cancers. An oncologist would recommend this in the cancer’s early stages.

The other one is radical hysterectomy. This surgery removes the cervix and uterus. It includes the upper part of the vagina. The doctor will also remove the surrounding tissues of these organs. Radical hysterectomy may also include removing the lymph nodes, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.

The patient will be under general anesthesia. Staying in the hospital for at least a week is crucial for recovery. The length of stay will depend on the type of hysterectomy. The doctor may also remove the nerves near the urinary bladder. As a result, some women have trouble urinating after the surgery.

Conization

An oncologist can suggest conization for precancers. Conization may remove the tissue or abnormal cells. This is possible with the use of a scalpel, LEEP, or laser. In LEEP (loop electrosurgical excision procedure), the doctor will use a loop of hot wire. In laser surgery, the doctor will use beams of light.

Radiation therapy

These gynecological cancer treatments give high doses of radiation to the cancerous cells. But they spare healthy tissue. The oncologist will focus the radiation on the tumor. These gynecological cancer treatments can reduce the risk of side effects. One type of radiation therapy is high-dose-rate brachytherapy. The other is called external beam radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy

This cancer treatment treats cancerous tissues with specific drugs. This gynecological cancer treatment can kill the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are gynecological cancer treatments capable of working together. This results in better patient response.

Chemotherapy will use one drug or several drugs to treat the patient for weeks or months. The oncologist will calculate the dosage for each type of drug. This will allow a careful targeting of cancerous cells. It will reduce the harm to the healthy cells.

Targeted therapy drugs

These treatments attach to the proteins of cancer cells. They either help other gynecological cancer treatments or kill the cancer cells. The drugs prevent cancer cells from forming blood vessels. This stops the nourishing supply of blood in the tumors.

Immunotherapy

This type of treatment uses the body’s immunity to kill the cancer cells. Immunotherapy drugs can treat lung and kidney cancers. They can also target melanomas. Combining immunotherapies with other gynecological cancer treatments can improve the results.

Using the mentioned gynecological cancer treatments can enhance your quality of life

Gynecological cancer can be devastating to patients and their families. Talking to your oncologist about the right treatment can help you prepare for it. Gynecological cancer treatments are often invasive. It may take time to finish the treatments, but the fight can improve your health and quality of life.
