Treatment Options for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a very common type of cancer that affects men. Often prostate cancer grows gradually and is initially confined to the prostate gland. In some cases, it may not cause serious harm. Minimal or no treatment may be needed for some types of prostate cancer that grow very slowly. However, other types are aggressive and usually spread rapidly. Fortunately, there are many effective treatment options for your prostate cancer especially if it is caught early.

Prostate cancer treatment

There is no particular prostate cancer treatment option that is right for every man. The doctor will take into account several factors before recommending any treatment. These include the size of the patient’s tumor and how far it has spread. Other things that will be considered are how quickly the tumor is likely to grow and the patient’s age, health and personal preferences. Here are some common prostate cancer treatment options.

Active surveillance or watchful waiting

The doctor may recommend waiting to see if the tumor will spread or grow before treating it. Many times, prostate cancer grows slowly. Some medical practitioners believe it is better not to treat it until it causes symptoms or changes. When it comes to watchful waiting, the doctor will closely track how the disease makes the patient feel. With active surveillance, a patient will also get regular tests that will help check on the cancer.

Surgery

Surgery is an option if the patient is healthy and the cancer has not spread. Different types may be suggested. This will be based on the type that is ideal for the patient’s situation. The doctor may only decide to remove the prostate gland.

Sometimes, removing the prostate gland and the tissue around it may be necessary. But people may suffer from certain side effects from an operation. In some cases, the side effects go away on their own after the procedure. The patient needs to talk to the doctor beforehand about the potential side effects and ways to prevent them.

Radiation

This type of treatment involves the use of high-energy beams to kill cancer. It is usually ideal when the cancer is still only in the prostate or low grade. It can also be a good choice after surgery. In this case, it will help to get rid of any cancer cells that have been left behind.

The two types of radiation treatment are external-beam radiation therapy and internal radiation therapy. External-beam radiation therapy involves the use of a machine outside the patient’s body to direct rays at the cancer. With internal radiation therapy or brachytherapy, the doctor does surgery to place radioactive seeds near or into the cancer. In some cases, a mix of both treatments may lead to a better outcome.

Takeaway

Some treatment options for prostate cancer include active surveillance or watchful waiting, surgery or radiation therapy. Your doctor will consider several factors before recommending the right treatment for you. You should always keep in mind that you have options. So you should pick the one that works for you.
