Most Common Types of Cancer

cancer Marlton, NJ

Cancer is a word most people do not want to hear. This disease can take lives and hinder a person’s quality of life. This does not mean the disease has to conquer you, though. With the right help and treatment, you can battle through the illness and resume your regular activities without pain and discomfort. One challenge is that the disease comes in many forms and can affect many parts of the body. It is helpful to discuss with your oncologist the different types of cancer, so you can be prepared for your treatment and recovery.

An overview

Cancer can affect people of all ages — young, middle-aged and old. No group of people is immune from suffering the effects of the disease. Cancer occurs when the body’s cells divide without stopping and begin to move into other tissues and organs. The disease often forms tumors, but it can also grow in a person’s blood. There are various ways to treat the disease, including chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapy. Surgery is often required to remove tumors and other masses in the body.

Skin cancer

This is the most common type of the disease among women. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause the disease. A person may detect the disease by noticing shiny spots or bumps on the shoulders, neck or face. This form of the disease is not usually life-threatening unless it is melanoma — a rare cancer type. Using sunscreen and protective clothing can help prevent the disease.

Breast cancer

After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most prevalent among women. In fact, one in eight women will get a diagnosis with this condition. A mammogram will help detect the disease, and all women should regularly get this test during wellness checkups. Age is the biggest risk factor for the condition, although genetics, obesity and alcohol consumption play a role as well.

Lung cancer

This disease is broken up into two categories: small cell lung and non-small cell lung. Although smoking is the biggest culprit for this form of the disease, people who have never smoked can develop it as well. When abnormal cells grow in the lungs, they will develop into tumors. These will inhibit one or both of the lungs and their ability to function properly. It is possible to treat this condition, but it can spread and develop into stages that are difficult to manage.

Thyroid cancer

This type of cancer has four different types. It is more common among women, but it can affect men as well. Fortunately, this disease has a high survivability rate. In most cases, the oncologist will treat it with a dose of radioactive iodine. Surgery is often necessary to remove tumors in the neck.

It is smart to be aware

Even if you do not currently have any form of the disease, it can be helpful to understand typical places it attacks. If your oncologist has diagnosed you, make sure you act quickly and develop a treatment plan. With many treatment options, killing the cells is possible. Call your doctor today to discuss your needs.
